Wednesday March 11th: Fulfillment of the Law

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Matthew 5:17-19

Very early in His well-known “Sermon on the Mount,” Jesus clarifies His intention to His listeners. He explains that He is not changing the law with which they are already familiar, but that He has now come to ‘complete’ or ‘fulfill’ it.

What does He mean?

Jesus is offering to His listeners and, by extension, to all of us, a deeper level of spiritual understanding of what He requires of us. No longer are we expected to simply follow external rituals that our faith requires, but rather, we must now also commit ourselves to living out their more meaningful underlying principles.

Our faith requires that we undertake certain rituals within the Church and we willingly obey, but do we truly understand WHY we do what we do?

Lord, make us aware of the graces and blessings that we receive through our faith. Make us aware of the deeper level of spirituality into which we are transposed when we exercise our faith well and encourage each other to do the same. Amen.
