‘Elijah was sent to a widow in Zarephath, a Sidonian town. ‘
Luke 4: 24-30
Jesus was from Nazareth but was not accepted there. This prompted him to say, ‘No prophet is ever accepted in his own country.’ He then gave examples of two prophets before him who went to foreign lands to help those in need.
We have many examples of people who left their own homeland to go to foreign territories to help. We know of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta. There are many others whom we call missionaries who leave their hometown to help others, sometimes in faraway lands.
What Jesus is telling us is that we need to go wherever we are needed. Just as he told his disciples that when they are not accepted: shake the dust off your feet. We are a universal church and need to go wherever we are needed.
Lord, give me eyes to see where I am needed so that I will show love to my neighbour.
