Friday February 27th: A Call for Deeper Inner Conversion.

Fasting and prayer prepare the soil, but reconciliation bears the fruit.

Matthew 5: 20 – 26

Lent confronts us with a demanding truth spoken by Jesus: “If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.” Christ is not calling for greater rule-keeping, but for deeper inner conversion. He moves the law from the courtroom to the conscience. It is not enough to avoid murder; we must confront the anger, resentment, and contempt that quietly destroy relationships long before violence takes place.

This Lent, Jesus urges reconciliation as an urgent spiritual priority. Before offering a gift at the altar, we are told to seek peace with those we have wounded or alienated. Worship divorced from charity is incomplete. True righteousness is measured not by public piety, but by our willingness to forgive, to listen, and to repair what has been broken.

This season asks us to examine hidden grudges, harsh words, and unresolved conflicts. Fasting and prayer prepare the soil, but reconciliation bears the fruit. Lent teaches us that holiness begins where humility restores communion.
