New Chancellor appointed

The Archdiocese has announced significant leadership changes affecting its Chancery and financial administration, marking the end of long-standing service by two senior lay officials and the appointment of a new Chancellor.

Joanne Miller has stepped down as Chancellor, effective February 20, after 18 years of senior voluntary leadership. From 2008 to 2020, she served as Head of Funding and Development, playing a central role in the national campaign to restore the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, which raised more than TT$60 million. In her more recent role as Chancellor and Episcopal Delegate for Chancery Administration, she guided a period of governance and financial reform amid institutional challenges.

Among the key initiatives during her tenure were the introduction of the Archdiocese’s first externally audited financial accounts, the securing of non-profit status, and the strengthening of internal controls and compliance procedures in line with Canon Law and the civil law of Trinidad and Tobago.

Church officials noted that these measures enhanced transparency, accountability and public trust, while safeguarding the Archdiocese’s pastoral, educational and charitable mission.

The Archdiocese also confirmed that the contract of Anthony Joseph as Finance Manager concluded on January 31 and will not be renewed at this time. Joseph was credited with helping to bring the Archdiocese to completed audits required to maintain its non-profit status, strengthening financial reporting standards and overall institutional credibility.

Gilbert Sankar has been appointed Chancellor effective February 21. Sankar has served for many years on the Archdiocesan Finance Council, including the past four years as Vice Chair, and has chaired the Investment Committee. At the parish level, he is an active member of St Ann’s parish, contributing to governance and parish life.

Sankar brings extensive experience in finance and corporate leadership, having worked with Scotiabank and Massy Finance GFC.

Church officials indicated that this background, combined with his longstanding ecclesial service, positions him to manage the Chancery’s administrative operations, including oversight of archives, notarial functions and official documentation.

While recruitment continues to replace Joseph, Sankar will also provide interim support to the Archdiocesan Finance Team.

Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon expressed gratitude for the service of Miller and Joseph, and has welcomed Sankar to his new responsibilities, invoking God’s blessing on all three as the Archdiocese enters this new phase of leadership and administration.
