It is a tall order to ask parents to set aside time in their already busy schedules. Between work, home responsibilities, and the many commitments that come with raising children, carving out space for additional formation can feel overwhelming.
Yet, when that time is filled with meaningful conversation, beneficial information, and genuine opportunities to connect and share their stories, the buy-in becomes evident.
At Chaguanas, a dedicated team of parents said ‘yes’ to creating a journey—not just for their own families, but for other parents whose children are partaking in the Confirmation process.
This Parent Engagement initiative was born out of a desire to support parents as primary educators in the faith, while walking alongside them during this important sacramental milestone.
The sessions were intentionally designed to meet parents where they are. Talks such as ‘Why do we even need Confirmation?’ invited parents to see the sacrament not as the current idea of a ‘graduation’, but as a strengthening and commissioning—an invitation into deeper discipleship and active participation in the life of the Church.
The sessions also aimed to address real-world challenges. Have you ever had a conversation with a teenager that went, “How was your day?” … “Norm-mel!”?
A session on ‘Undertaking Difficult Dialogue’, facilitated by Alicia Hoyte of the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC), proved to be so rich and impactful that it led to a Part Two.
Parents returned on February 7, ready to share their realities as they navigated conversations and explored the deeper ‘why’ behind why these discussions often feel so difficult.
The vulnerability shown and the mutual support that emerged affirmed the importance of creating safe spaces where parents can learn from one another while being grounded in faith.
The Parent Engagement initiative has been supported by our Parish Priest Fr Steve Ransome, who generously gives of his time to lead some of the sessions. We also continue to benefit from the guidance and collaboration of the AFLC, whose resources and support strengthen the programme’s impact.
Parents who have attended described the sessions as “a reality check” and shared that the information was both useful and timely.
As we now begin our Lenten journey, there is a renewed sense of excitement and hope as we continue to walk alongside parents and candidates during this sacred season.
We extend sincere gratitude to Lauren and the entire Parent Engagement Team for their ‘yes’. Through their willingness to serve, we continue building community, parish, and Church together. — Mario & Shelly-Ann Romany, Family Life Unit Coordinators, Chaguanas
