Christ identifies with the needy…. especially the poor.
Matthew 25: 31-46
Today’s Gospel reminds us that our eternal destiny at the final judgement is determined by the expression of our faith through corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming strangers, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, visiting the imprisoned and burying the deceased. Any act of charity to the “least” among us is an act of charity toward Christ himself, Christ identifies with the needy…especially the poor.
The wicked who neglect these works face eternal punishment. “Just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” We are called to serve one another, but we fail to notice those among us in need when we become so distracted by the things of each day. To grow in charity, we must be willing to be detached from our selfish desires and pursuits.
Dear Lord, open our eyes to the needy today, Amen.
