“God really does not have favourites…”
Luke 5:27-32
‘Why?’ the Pharisees wanted to know. ‘Why do you eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ They were really asking why He would spend time in the company of people of questionable character and tainted morals.
Jesus’ response is instructive. ‘It is not those that are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call not the upright but sinners to repentance.’ With those words He declared His mission and purpose. The Lord knew what He was about, so what He was really saying was ‘I go where I am needed. I choose the unexpected and the marginalized. I call those in need of healing’
What I hear is, God really does not have favourites; not one of us is out of His reach. He notices us – the misguided, the lost, the lonely, anxious, overworked, struggling. The gaze of mercy he bestowed on Levi he also lovingly casts upon us. The invitation to repentance and salvation He also extends to us.
In faith, let us get up and leave everything to follow Him, daily.
