Thursday February 19th: Denials and Renewal

Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Luke 9: 22- 25

We love to sing “I have decided to follow Jesus!” Following Jesus involves a cost. As Christians we live out our lives in the everyday grind.  No one who decides to follow Him escapes.

The cross comes in many forms, shapes, and sizes. Noone wants to suffer but it is part of the Christian life. If we believe that Jesus Christ is ‘the son of Man’ and we decide to follow him then we must do as he says and did. We must pick up our cross, however it presents itself.

Our consolation is that Jesus is always with us in those situations. We too must suffer and die when we face unemployment, illnesses, abusive spouses, bad habits and hopelessness. We carry our cross like Christ. We suffer for love of others, but we are then raised to ‘new life’.

As we begin Lent, let us pray for the graces needed to renounce those things that would hinder us from following Christ more closely, on the road to new life.
