Wednesday February 18th: Our Father sees in secret

Ash Wednesday

Formation as missionary disciples begins precisely here: in integrity, humility, and a converted heart.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

Today Jesus draws us into the hidden heart of discipleship. Prayer, almsgiving, and fasting are not performances for applause and self-advertisements but quiet encounters with God who sees in secret.
Formation as missionary disciples begins precisely here: in integrity, humility, and a converted heart. Without this inner grounding, mission becomes activism without soul, and faith becomes image rather than witness. Jesus warns against righteousness done for show because it distorts both discipleship and justice.
When charity is public display, the poor become props. When prayer is self-referential, God is displaced. True missionary disciples allow their relationship with God to shape how they act in the world—especially on behalf of those excluded, wounded, or forgotten.
Almsgiving done quietly forms disciples who see the dignity of others, not their usefulness. Fasting frees us from excess and trains us to recognize structures of greed and inequality. Prayer roots our struggle for justice in God’s mercy rather than anger.
What is formed in secret becomes credible in public. A Church of missionary disciples is one whose pursuit of justice and peace is sustained by lives quietly aligned with God.
