Jesus said ‘I have come not to abolish the Law or the prophets but to complete them’
Matthew 5:17 – 37
The ‘Law” began with the ten commandments given to Moses. The ‘law’ also referred to the whole teaching or way of life which God gave to his people through the prophets.
Jesus, the Word of God, is the fulfilment of all the things God had spoken about through the law and prophets: reverence for God himself, for the Lord’s Day, respect for parents, for life, for property, for another person’s good name, for oneself and for one’s neighbour.
Jesus fulfilled these commands in his life and his teachings: the call to righteousness, turning away from anger, swearing, and revenge and the need to love our enemies. The greatest commandments Jesus taught us are Love of God and Love of neighbour.
Jesus dwells in us through the power of the Holy Spirit. By our own merits, we are unable to keep the commandments as we face the many challenges in our daily lives. With Jesus in us, we have the strength, understanding and courage to obey God’s commandments.
