Often today the language of the past disturbs our present-day sensibilities. That is why Pope Leo XIV said in his reflections on Vatican II document, Dei Verbum – that we must also consider historical context and genre of language.
When she answered Jesus, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs,” our Syrophonecian lady answers Jesus in the language of the Israelites of the time, demonstrating her faith.
Her faith in Jesus, despite her nationality, moves him so deeply that he immediately cures her daughter. She is a heroic example for us today.
Lord, give us a faith that emboldens us to make our requests known to you, believing that you will hear and answer us. Amen.
