“I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head, immediately, on a dish.”
Mark 6: 14 – 29
In today’s gospel an unnamed girl becomes a warning about immature choices and unexamined desires. She is caught in the drama of adults who misuse power. During an innocent celebration, she allows herself to be guided not by wisdom or conscience, but by excitement, flattery, and the pressure to please. Without reflecting, she asks for something horrific. A careless decision becomes a deadly one, and a young life becomes an instrument of cruelty.
This Gospel reminds us that immaturity is not simply being young; it is failing to think, to question, to discern. When we allow impulse, peer pressure, or the need to impress to guide us, we too can hurt others deeply and damage our own souls. Today’s reading challenges us to moral maturity: to pause before acting, to seek counsel, to consider the weight of our choices. Let us ask God for the wisdom to choose rightly the courage to resist pressure, and the grace to act with integrity, so that our decisions lead to life, not regret.
