Vision Boards, Intentions, and Letting God Lead

By Davidia Sydney

I know. I know. It’s almost the end of January. The time for talking about goals, vision boards and intentions for the new year was at the end of December or beginning of January.

But to me, it’s never too late to think about your goals or work on them.

In the middle of January, I made a vision board with friends and now I’m doing some reflection.

One of my goals was to write more articles for The Catholic News’ Women’s Blog this year. This is my first article of the year, and I thought what better topic than: Vision Boards, Intentions, and ‘Letting God Lead—A Christian girl’s guide to dreaming with faith’.

There’s something about the start of a new year that makes you feel reflective and hopeful all at once. Maybe it’s the clean pages of a fresh calendar, or the quiet belief that this year could be different. A new start. A chance to quit bad habits and start new ones that represent the person you are becoming.

That’s why vision boards, setting intentions, and writing my goals down have become important to me, not because I believe I can ‘manifest’ my life on my own, but because they help me clarify what I want for my life. Writing it down helps to make it actionable and helps prevent forgetfulness.

Habakkuk 2:2 – “Write the vision and make it plain.”

I need to be clear: vision boards are not manifestations. When I make a vision board, I’m not telling God what He must do. My vision board isn’t about control, it’s about clarity. Cutting out pictures and sticking it on a board does not mean your goals will come true. That’s not how it works. It’s a reminder of your goals and what you are working towards. It motivates you to put in the effort to accomplish those goals.

I start my year with prayer. I start my goal planning session with prayer. I ask God to remove desires that don’t align with His will and to refine the ones that do. I surrender my entire life and my goals to His will.

Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”

Psalm 37:4 – “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

That verse doesn’t mean God grants every wish. It means that as we delight in Him, He reshapes our desires to look more like His.

A vision board becomes powerful when it’s rooted in prayer, Scripture, and surrender.

Setting intentions and choosing how you want to live.

Goals tell what you want to do, while intentions remind you how you want to live while doing it.

Intentions can sound like:

I intend to trust God even when I don’t understand.
I intend to speak kindly to myself.
I intend to obey God quickly, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Intentions keep your heart aligned when life doesn’t go according to plan.

Proverbs 3:5–6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Finally, my most important tip is to set goals, but hold them very loosely.

I do not mean to have the attitude of, ‘It is what it is, if I don’t accomplish it so be it,’ or ‘I’m not even gonna try.’ I mean do not idolise your goals. Do not become obsessed with the destination. There’s freedom in knowing that our job is obedience, not outcome.

If God redirects you, you need to be willing to pivot. If He says ‘wait’, you want to trust His timing. If a door closes, you need to believe it’s protection, not punishment.

Proverbs 16:9 – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Closing prayer:

Lord, as we step into this year, we give You our dreams, our plans, and our fears. Align our desires with Your will. Teach us to work diligently and trust deeply. Help us to dream boldly, wait patiently, and obey faithfully. May this year draw us closer to You above all else. Amen.

Wherever you are in life and whatever your goals are for this year, remember God sees you, God is with you, and God is writing a story far more beautiful than anything you could pin to a board.

Dream with Him. Plan with Him. Walk with Him.
