The growth happens mysteriously, quietly, in God’s time.
Mark 4:26–34
Jesus invites us to contemplate the mystery of the Kingdom of God through the simple act of sowing seed. He describes a man scattering seed, then sleeping and rising, unaware of how it grows. This imagery calls us to a profound trust recognising that growth belongs ultimately to God, not to human effort alone.
The farmer’s work is essential, preparing the soil, scattering the seed, but she/he cannot force the life within the seed or make it bear. Similarly, in our spiritual lives, our actions, prayers, acts of kindness, witness, are vital, yet the transformation of hearts and the flourishing of God’s Kingdom are beyond our full control.
We are tempted to demand immediate results, to measure success by visible outcomes. Jesus counters this by reminding us that faithful sowing is enough; the growth happens mysteriously, quietly, in God’s time. Our task is not to manipulate, but to participate with patience and trust, confident that even the smallest seeds we plant can bear fruit we may never see.
