Sunday January 25th: The choice is ours

Sunday of the Word of God

“Repent, the reign of God is at hand.”

Matthew 4:12-23

In a land occupied by foreign powers, ruled by a cunning, immoral and cruel politician, John is arrested because in his person, dress, acts, and words he fearlessly challenges all to turn their entire lives over to the God who was coming in person to save them.

Jesus, endorses the message, “Repent, the reign of God is at hand.”

By embracing both the permissive and the perfect will of God, these cousins teach us that God will not force His will upon us, even to prevent immense pain. Rather, God continuously offers us opportunities to reorient our thinking, being and doing, to His way.

The murders of John and Jesus are not the last word in our salvation story…afterwards came the resurrection, ascension, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
As we continue that story, whom will we choose to give reign in our lives: Herod, John, Jesus?

In the power of the Holy Spirit, we pray:

O Lord I am willing
Do what you must do
To make me like you Lord,
Please make me like you.
Amen!
