Popularity, noise, and public opinion are not reliable sources for truth.
Mark 3:7-12
Great crowds press in on Jesus, drawn by his power; he is not controlled by them. Even unclean spirits recognize him and he silences them. This moment reminds us that popularity, noise and public opinion are not reliable sources for truth. Crowds can move us in one direction or another, tempting us to abandon the practice of prayerful discernment or independent thought simply to fit in. Scripture reminds us that we are called to be set apart. Leviticus 20:26 declares that we shall be holy to him, for he is holy and has separated us from the peoples that we should be his.
To follow Christ faithfully, we must learn when to step back and allow God, not the crowd…to shape our hearts. Jesus himself withdraws, demonstrating a need for distance. It is in solitude and silence, away from the distractions, where our conscience is well formed and intimacy with the beloved deepens.
