Wednesday January 21st: Who Are You Affecting?

He acted in defence of the man with the deformed hand…

Mark 3:1-6

Today’s Gospel is a fascinating exchange between a courageous, defiant Jesus and the steadfastly stubborn, vindictive Pharisees. Entering the Synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus sees a man with a withered hand. Unsurprisingly, he was going to be God and heal the poor man, but the Pharisees? They were looking to trap him by accusing him of breaking the law of the Sabbath. Who would win this little powerplay?

As the scene unfolds, it is easy to overlook the person at the centre of this conflict. We forget that at the other end of this drama, is a human being awaiting his fate, holding his breath to see the outcome of this interaction, to see if healing was in his reach.

Jesus knew the Pharisees were looking to condemn him, yet he acted in defence of the man with the deformed hand. He healed, not to be adversarial, but to bring restoration. This was his nature. For Him, it was always people before precepts, love before laws. So should it be for us.
