Wednesday January 14th: Let Jesus set us free!

“That evening after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed”

Mark 1: 29-39

In today’s Gospel, Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law of her fever. This caught the attention of many who brought others to Him for healing and deliverance from demons. I can just imagine people lined up for miles! Somehow, this scene makes me think about how we who are sick and ‘demon-possessed’ attend Mass every week, seeking that encounter with Jesus.

Many believe that all churchgoers are saints who come to Christ already saved and sanctified. However, sitting in those pews are hurt people, broken people, rejected people, people battling with sin-sickness, some not even aware that healing is needed. What makes things worse, is that when we do not act the way we are expected to as followers of Christ, it scandalises the faith and we start hearing about ‘dem Catholics.’

After experiencing a Jubilee Year of Hope, let us really come to Jesus with every area of our lives that needs healing and deliverance. Let us acknowledge that we are ‘works in progress’ and that if Jesus sets us free in 2026, we will be free indeed. Amen.
