Wednesday December 31st: Christ, Our Light!

“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world”

John 1: 1 – 18

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is introduced at the beginning of time as ‘the Word’ and the ‘Light of all mankind.’  We also met John, who “came as a witness to testify concerning that light.”

The idea of ‘true light’ coming into the world – giving light to everyone- feels incredibly reassuring, particularly in this moment when it seems that our country is surrounded by the anxiety of ‘war-talk’ and other troubling news.

As we contemplate 2025, how have we been light in this darkness that surrounds us? Do people see Christ’s light in us? Do we look for the light of Christ in others? Are we better followers of Christ, having experienced this Jubilee Year of Hope? Did we spend the Jubilee year moving from sacred site to sacred site, making sure to get our passports stamped, yet we are still not witnesses to the light?

The light we are given – Jesus- is meant to shine through us and unto others. As we bring 2025 to a close, let us pause to reflect on the ways we can bring light to the world in 2026.
