The Holy Family
May our families be holy, not because of our own strength, but because of our willingness to surrender to God’s guidance and love.
Matthew 2: 13-25, 19-23
Reflecting on today’s Gospel, I’m struck by the contrast between my earlier understanding of a “holy family” and the reality of Jesus’ own family. I once believed holiness meant a perfect, nuclear family, settled in one place, attending church regularly. But the Holy Family’s story challenges this notion.
They were a family on the run, hunted by those who sought to harm their child. They were refugees, fleeing to Egypt, guided by strangers and divine interventions. Yet, they demonstrated remarkable faith and obedience to God’s will. What made them holy? Perhaps it was their ability to discern God’s voice and choose the path that aligned with His plan.
As I look at my own family, I see imperfections and challenges. But I also see love, laughter, and a desire to follow God’s will. May we, like them, choose to live the true connections, exemplifying love, compassion, and obedience to God’s will, even when it’s hard. May our families be holy, not because of our own strength, but because of our willingness to surrender to God’s guidance and love.
