Friday December 12th: Jubilee Moments

Our Lady of Guadalupe. Feast.

“Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

Luke 1: 39 – 47

Mary’s visit to Elizabeth is a true moment of Jubilee. Elizabeth had waited so long for God’s promise, and when Mary arrives, she sparks joy and rejoicing which fill the already pregnant Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary’s greeting, the baby in her womb leaps, Elizabeth rejoices recognising that God has already begun something new in her. Mary brings not just comfort, she brings hope.

Jubilee also fills Mary’s visit to St. Juan Diego centuries later. He was a simple man, facing worries bigger than himself when Mary comes to him with gentleness and reassurance: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother?” Her words offer hope to Juan Diego, his ailing uncle and to an entire people. Mary reminds them that hope (God) does not disappoint.

Both visits, one to a quiet home in Judea, the other to a Hill in Mexico City, are visits of hope. Mary comes close whenever hearts are weary. She reminds us that God has not forgotten us and that Christ is near even in uncertain times.
