“Doing nothing is never an option”
Luke 19:11-28
“It is better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all.” This saying comes to mind when reading this passage from Luke’s Gospel. Ten servants entrusted with ten pounds and clear instructions to “do business with these.” The first two interviewed upon the nobleman’s return have obeyed, making a profit and earning praise and promotion.
The third we learn has done absolutely nothing with the coin entrusted to him, meriting his master’s ire. The servant has his reasons of course, but the master has no time for his excuses, simply because he failed to do even the least that could be done.
We have our instructions too, with resources, personal gifts given to us to help bring light to a broken world – but we wait, hesitate. We fail to act. We need to figure out our fears and excuses, the things that hold us back from getting involved or drawing closer to God. Because, when working in the Kingdom of God, doing nothing is never an option.
