“Anyone who tries to preserve his life will lose it; and anyone who loses it will keep it safe.”
Luke 17: 26 – 36
In today’s gospel, Jesus reminds us that the coming of the Son of Man will be sudden and unexpected, just as in the days of Noah and Lot, when people were eating, drinking, and living ordinary lives until the moment of judgment came. The message is clear: life goes on as usual, but God’s call can come at any time.
Jesus is not trying to frighten us, but to awaken us. He calls us to live each day ready, to live faithfully, lovingly, and honestly, so that whenever He comes, He will find us ready. The danger is spiritual complacency: becoming so absorbed in the world that we forget what truly matters.
“Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,” Jesus says, “but whoever loses it will keep it.” We are invited to let go of selfishness and live in the light of eternity. The Son of Man will come, perhaps when we least expect, but for the faithful person, His coming will be pure joy.
