“For look, the Kingdom of God is among you.”
Luke 17:20-25
The Pharisees believed the Kingdom of God was an actual kingdom where the military would overthrow Rome’s imperial power with the Messiah-King as its deliverer. Jesus challenges this idea, insisting the Kingdom of God is already among them through the compassionate way he interacts with others—healing the sick, driving out demons, teaching, raising people from the dead.
Once alone with his disciples, Jesus explains that when the Son of Man finally reveals himself, it will be sudden, like lightning. Therefore, there will be no need for anyone to say he is here or there since his presence will be felt everywhere. Nevertheless, he warns them that before that happens, they, like him, will have to endure suffering and rejection from others. We, too, are called to live our lives with the knowledge that the Kingdom of God is indeed within us.
Dear Lord, we pray we may shine our light in a world that lures us into false beliefs and practices. Amen.
