The HerConnect Women’s Conference hosted by the Women’s Fellowship of the Southern Vicariate Womentum Events was held at the Presentation College Auditorium in San Fernando on October 20. The Women’s Conference embodied faith, sisterhood and support.
The Billings Ovulation Method Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BOMA-TT) was invited to host an information table as one of the stakeholders at the Conference. We embraced the opportunity for greater outreach to those present who might not have thought they would need it or were not even aware of BOMA-TT.
Visitors to the table enquired about infrequent, unpredictable menstrual cycles and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Some of the ladies, upon approaching the table, mentioned that they had passed the stage (meaning that this Method was not for them).
They were made aware that this Method is not merely for achieving and postponing pregnancy, but it involves monitoring women’s health in a holistic fashion, thus enabling them to understand the beauty of body awareness from puberty to perimenopause and menopause.
Leaflets and various educational books pertaining to the Method, the body and theology related to the body were on sale, all of which captured their interest. Tea-in-Love bags, including inspirational biblical verses, were also given away as gifts to participants at the end of the seminar.
The featured speaker of the Conference was the Honourable Madame Justice Tricia Hudlin-Cooper. She reminded us that even Moses in the Old Testament was “big enough to ask for help!” and thus she reminded us as women to “ask for help!”.
The Billings Ovulation Method® embodies the ideals of faith, sisterhood and support. Furthermore, it was founded on the principle that there is a natural way to plan a family. Planning a family involves understanding a woman’s body and the changes that occur, which signal the fertile and infertile periods or even more medically.
The term ‘menopause baby’ or ‘lagniappe’ is used in Trinidad and Tobago when a child is conceived during menopause. Often, women say in our language, ‘ah done with that, no more children’.
The Billings Ovulation Method® can assist during this period to minimise the chances of having an unplanned baby. The unpredictability of the menstrual cycle at this stage in women’s lives often causes frustration. The Billings Method increases the likelihood of knowing when the fertile period is, if the desire is to conceive or put-off pregnancy due to serious reasons for doing so.
Daily charting of bodily changes using the Billings Ovulation Method® assists women in identifying the fertile window for pregnancy. PCOS may impact a woman’s mental health, especially if undiagnosed. Through daily charting, the Billings Ovulation Method® can also alert women to potential medical issues. BOMA offers free consultations and classes with trained teachers of the Method.
We conduct outreach initiatives and participate in educational events, such as the Mother and Daughter Time programme.
