The Church’s support lives on

From Archbishop’s Appeal

In this month of November, as we journey together towards the Feast of Christ the King, on November 22 and 23, we follow last week’s article ‘Where Hope Lives’ with this installation, which provides an expanded view of the impact of the Mission of our Church.

In homes across our Archdiocese, families struggle daily with the pressures of modern life as social media distractions, gang activity in schools, parental stress and fractured relationships take their toll. Through its ministries, the Catholic Church remains a steadfast companion, offering support, hope and transformation.

Think of our Catholic schools where thousands of children begin each day with a prayer and a sense of belonging. Many of these children come from neighbourhoods where opportunities are limited and hope can feel fragile.

In several communities, a Catholic school is the only real chance a child has to learn in a safe and supportive environment. Teachers are being trained to better understand the needs of their students. Children who struggle with learning difficulties are being identified early and given the help they need to keep going. Thanks to improved access to technology and ongoing training, students who once risked being left behind can now keep pace with the world around them. These schools do more than teach lessons. They build confidence. They restore dignity. They open doors to a future filled with possibility.

Alongside this work in our schools, the Church continues to walk closely with families who are trying their very best in an increasingly difficult world. Parenting workshops, marriage retreats, and small community support groups are helping mothers and fathers to better understand their children and strengthen their homes with patience, prayer, and love.

These programmes teach practical skills for raising children in a time of constant online influence, peer pressure, and financial stress. One parent recently shared, “I felt lost and overwhelmed. After the sessions, I learned how to talk with my daughter again. Our home feels peaceful for the first time in years.”

When a mother gains the confidence to guide her child or a father finds renewed hope in his role, the change spreads beyond the front door and into the heart of the community.

Our young people are also being guided and supported as they navigate a world that often feels loud and confusing. Retreats, workshops, and parish gatherings are giving them spaces where they can be themselves, ask questions and discover who God is calling them to be. They learn through fun and meaningful moments such as games, music, prayer, and honest conversation with peers who face similar struggles.

One teenager shared quietly after a retreat, “I thought I was alone in how I felt. Now I know God is with me and I have friends who understand.” In these moments, faith becomes real, and the Church remains alive in the hearts of the next generation.

And when families face the basic lack of food, clothing, and shelter, our Church is there. In neighbourhoods scarred by crime, violence and poverty, the Church’s outreach ministries respond with kindness and dignity. Whether through parish hampers, counselling, or community service, the message remains clear: you are seen; you are loved; you belong.

This mission—including education, family support, youth formation, and social outreach—is fuelled by the generosity of the faithful.

On the Feast of Christ the King, November 22 and 23,  there is a special collection in all parishes which will be dedicated entirely to sustaining and expanding this work across the Archdiocese.

You give, and the Church acts. You donate, and hope is restored.

Let your gift this Feast of Christ the King not only sustain the ministries, but expand them so that every child, every parent, every family touched by struggle, may walk into a future built by faith, formed by community, and grounded in love.
