All Souls’ Day
“And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.”
Luke 7: 11-14
Today’s Gospel passage focusing on the restoration of life to the widow’s son is a clear reminder of the love of a God of mercy and compassion who cares about our temporal welfare. And many of us can attest to that!
However, it is also symbolic of the life, eternal life, that God is offering us all through the intervention of His Son, Jesus, who by his life, death and resurrection sets us free from eternal damnation.
Today as we commemorate the souls of all the Faithful Departed, we join the universal church in prayer for those in Purgatory and we are called to reflect also on our own fate after death. Yesterday we celebrated the feasting of the Saints already in the full presence of God. Today we remember those, yearning, longing for that release for full admittance into the Holy Presence.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the Faithful Departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
