Friday October 31st: Obstacles to Compassion

Christ calls us to act with mercy, to put people before regulations, and mercy before pride.

Luke 14: 1 – 6

In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals a man suffering from dropsy on the Sabbath, and then He asks a piercing question: “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” The silence of the Pharisees reveals the danger of rigid rule-keeping without love. They were so focused on protecting the law that they missed the very heart of the law: mercy.

Rules guide us, but they are never ends in themselves. God’s commandments are given to draw us closer to Him and to one another. When rules become obstacles to compassion, we lose sight of God’s desire. Jesus shows us that love always fulfils the law.

Like the Pharisees, we too can hide behind rules or traditions when compassion feels inconvenient or risky. But Christ calls us to act with mercy, to put people before regulations, and mercy before pride.

Today, let us ask for the grace to see as Jesus sees, that every law finds its deepest meaning in love, and every action should be rooted in compassion.
