“Now as He was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, ‘Happy the womb that bore you, and the breasts you sucked!’ But He replied, ‘Still happier those who hear the word of God and keep it!’”
Luke 11:27-28
This scripture passage, while short, is truly profound.
Let us be clear from the outset: Jesus’ words are, in no way, a rebuke of Mary or a denial of Her blessedness.
On the contrary, He acknowledges Mary’s blessedness because indeed, it is she who physically gave birth to Him; at the same time Jesus emphasizes Mary’s spiritual blessedness. She did not only hear and obey God’s word (when she responded to the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation), but proved to be blessed, more-so, because of her lifelong, unwavering obedience and devotion to God.
Similarly, Jesus highlights the spiritual blessedness of those of us who align our lives each day with God’s will and God’s Word. When we listen to the Word of God daily and allow it to become an intimate part of our lives, we too become children of God and of Mary, and brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.
We are all invited into God’s family, through steadfast faith and action.
