“And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.”
Luke 9:43-45
I used to be amazing at getting things done. Then I felt like Life sucker-punched me and I fell so hard to the ground that it took me years to get back up. But even though all the signs were there, I was even saying to everyone that my faith was shattered. No one heard me.
For years I marvelled that on the days that I scraped myself up and I struggled for the will to go on, people sitting next to me in church would not notice.
In today’s Gospel Jesus was literally telling the people closest to him that he was going to die and right after that they started to talk about who is the best. Really?
It is a reminder that spiritual maturity requires more than proximity to holiness; I mean they were the closest to Jesus and they did not hear him. Spiritual maturity demands attentiveness, courage, and a willingness to embrace mystery. May we be people of faith who look beyond.
