21 August, 2025.
Today as I walked into St Theresa’s RC Church, I heard a comforting voice as I entered. Mass had already begun and as I looked forward there was the priest behind the comforting voice; Msgr Kenneth Spence. He also has a gentle disposition, one that welcomes you and speaks of love.
His stature was unique that reflected his personality and like a gentle giant his arms are open to the best hug ever.
I told myself on entering, that I was going to savour every moment of this Mass and afterwards, I’d go for my big hug and photo with Msgr Kenneth Spence after.
I wanted to be in the here and now, enjoying and respecting every moment and decided not to record the Homily nor take any pics which is not like me. What mattered was being in the moment celebrating the Mass with Msgr Spence and those gathered.
“Savour every moment, Linda,” I said to myself.
I recall the following words from the Homily
“Here I am Lord. I come to do your will”
“My primary importance in life is to do God’s will”
“Adapt, adapting helps you in your life. (As he looked over to his walking stick.)
“You have to be willing to be patient”.
I was eager to receive the Word as Msgr Spence taught us to love the Word, Body and Blood of Christ.
Then, just before the Final Blessings, Msgr Spence slumped to the ground.
I needed that hug from him to say all will be well.
Then I ran to the altar and took the shilling oil for him to smell. This did not work and everyone did their role in trying to get him to feel better.
Amidst the prayer in the church by everyone, he lay there on the ground. Our gentle giant. The most I could have done was hold his hands and feet.
You went with your boots on Msgr Kenneth Spence.
Thank you for your gentleness, your grace, your happy demeanour, your outward and inward emotions of love and care.
Your love for orchids speaks of your ability to create an atmosphere that promotes health and growth for one to strive on.
I remember your love for rice, dahl and fried caraille, which you shared with my aunty every fortnight.
Your love for us at St Peters RC, Orange Valley, will always be remembered. And most of all, your bear hugs, fun and happy homilies, your impeccable communication skills, your celebration style for birthdays including yours, and appreciation for us as a community will not be forgotten.
Thanks, Msgr Kenneth Spence. Love you lots.
Rest in peace.
