Fr David Khan was the main celebrant at Holy Mass to reopen the St Vincent Ferrer RC Church, Moruga on August 28. Following is his message to parishioners.
Today is a day of great joy and thanksgiving. We gather for the reopening of this house of God, St Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church, a place where generations have come to pray, to be baptised, to celebrate the Eucharist, to confess their sins, to be married, and to commend loved ones to the mercy of God. The reopening of a church is never just about walls and ceilings, but about hearts and souls being rekindled with the fire of faith.
Providentially, this reopening falls on the Feast of St Augustine of Hippo, one of the greatest teachers and saints of the Church. Augustine’s life tells us that renewal is always possible. He wandered far from God in his youth, searching for meaning in many places, until he discovered that only Christ could satisfy the longing of his restless heart. His famous words echo in our lives today: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
In a sense, Augustine’s story mirrors what we celebrate here. Just as his life was renewed by God’s grace, so this church is renewed for God’s glory. Its reopening is a visible sign that God never abandons His people, but constantly calls us back, renews us, and sends us forth as witnesses.
We also remember our patron, St Vincent Ferrer, the great Dominican preacher, who devoted his life to calling people back to repentance and conversion. He was known as the “angel of the Apocalypse,” not because he frightened people, but because he urged them to take the Gospel seriously.
His preaching shook hearts, moved crowds, and brought many back to the faith. Augustine and Vincent both teach us the same lesson: that renewal begins with turning our hearts back to God.
This reopening is a call for us in three ways: First, it is a call to gratitude. We thank God for this sacred space, for all who worked, sacrificed, and prayed to make this day possible. We thank those who, like St Monica, Augustine’s mother, persevered in prayer for this community.
Second, it is a call to conversion. A church building is not an end in itself. Its true purpose is to house a people renewed in Christ. These walls remind us that our lives are to be temples of the Holy Spirit. Augustine once said, “Return to your heart. See there what you might know of God.” Let us return to our hearts, repent, and be renewed.
Third, it is a call to mission. The beauty of this church will attract eyes, but our lives must attract souls. As Augustine, once converted, became a tireless preacher and teacher, and as Vincent Ferrer travelled tirelessly to proclaim Christ, so too must we take our faith beyond these walls into families, workplaces, and society.
My friends, today we celebrate not just the reopening of a building, but the reawakening of a community. May St Augustine teach us to never stop seeking God. May St Vincent Ferrer inspire us to proclaim the Gospel with courage. May this church here in Gran Chemin, Moruga, always be a place where restless hearts find rest in Christ.
Let us now dedicate ourselves anew, as individuals and as a parish, to be living stones in the temple of the Lord.
