Friday August 29th: The courage of his conviction

The beheading of John the Baptist draws us into the tension between truth and compromise. The gospel teaches us to live our faith sincerely, and courageously even if it is costly.

John the Baptist embodied this integrity. He spoke truth to power, confronting Herod’s sin, knowing it might cost him his life. And indeed, it did. His martyrdom wasn’t just a tragedy, it was a testimony. John reminds us that the Gospel demands more than comfort; it demands conviction.

In a world that prizes appearances and avoids offense, John’s witness calls us to deeper authenticity. Do we stand for truth even when it is unpopular? Do we proclaim Christ not just in our words, but in how we live?

John’s martyrdom should not scare us into silence or timidity, thinking the same might happen to us. In fact it ought to give us courage, that if he could do it, so can we. John stood for something more than himself. He stood for truth, integrity and right.
