Power in Difference – Bethesda respite camp 2025

Bethesda, a ministry of the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC) that serves and supports families with persons who have disabilities, hosted its annual Respite Camp from Monday, July 28 to Thursday 31, and Tuesday, August 5 to Friday 8, under the theme Power in Difference.

Campers were divided into five vibrant groups: Champions, Heroes, Winners, Masters, and Conquerors. Each group was guided by two special education teachers and supported by six trained student volunteers, all of whom were prepared through training sessions hosted by Bethesda.

The camp featured a variety of engaging activities that encouraged creativity, collaboration, and fun. Some highlights included:

• Decorating cookies
• Jewellery making
• Slime making
• Creative crafts, such as: java lights made from recycled water bottles; frogs with rolling straw tongues powered by breath; jersey art.

Each day began and ended with circle time, where music and exercise helped campers establish routine and transition smoothly. A special clean-up song also made tidying up interactive and fun for everyone.

The camp concluded with a closing ceremony on the final day, where participants proudly shared their experiences and creations. Bethesda was honoured to welcome several distinguished guests, including representatives from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), Dr Beverly Beckles (retired CEO of the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities), and Dr Rene Wibhy and Rhonda Cielto, acting principals of Presentation College, Chaguanas, and Holy Faith Convent, Couva respectively. Their presence highlighted the spirit of collaboration and support that makes the camp such a meaningful experience.

This year’s camp provided not just respite for families, but also a joyful space for participants to discover new skills, express themselves, and celebrate the truth of the theme: the Power in Difference.
