Love is the root and the goal.
Matthew 22: 34 – 40
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is asked to name the greatest commandment. His answer is both simple and profound: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself.”
Jesus says these two fulfil the whole Law and the Prophets. Every commandment in Scripture, from the Ten Commandments to the prophetic calls for justice and mercy, flows from love. Love is the root and the goal.
To love God fully is to place Him at the center of our lives, to seek His will in all things. And to love our neighbour is to see God’s image in every person, treating them with compassion, patience, and dignity.
When we live in this love, the law is no longer a burden but a joy. In loving God and neighbour, we live the very heart of God’s law, a law that leads not to mere rule-keeping, but to a life of holiness and grace.
