The Archdiocesan Family Life Commission recently hosted an online session, Sunday July 20, as part of July Jubilee Family month. Titled, ‘Introduction to Divorce Coaching, Grieving and Tools for Coping’, certified divorce transition coach Shelly Sadaphal led the session, which offered encouragement, clarity, and concrete strategies for those navigating one of life’s most difficult journeys.
Sadaphal explained that divorce coaching is not a replacement for a lawyer or counsellor but complementary support.
A divorce coach helps individuals make logical decisions rather than emotional ones, empowering them to find their voice, minimise conflict, and even reduce legal costs. “It’s about moving from simply surviving to truly thriving,” she shared.
Participants were introduced to tools that can be easily overlooked in the fog of grief: monthly budgeting, meal planning, and incorporating exercise into daily routines.
These simple but powerful habits can help restore order and stability at a time when everything feels uncertain. One participant noted, “It was such a timely reminder of the things I’ve been ignoring. These tools make me feel like I can breathe again and start fresh.”
The session also explored the concept of “ambiguous loss,” the unresolved grief that often comes with divorce, and how to cope through faith, mindfulness, and community support. Sadaphal encouraged participants to build resilience plans, identify their support systems, and remember that healing is a process.
Perhaps one of the most liberating takeaways of the session was the reminder that caring for oneself is not selfish. “Self-care allows us to be stronger, more present, and better able to show up for our children, family, and community,” Sadaphal emphasised. Practical steps such as prayer, journalling, mindful walks, and seeking professional support were highlighted as essential parts of rebuilding a healthy life.
Many who attended expressed deep gratitude for the session. They found hope not only in the strategies shared but also in the faith-filled perspective that wove through every part of the presentation. As one participant reflected, “It reminded me that God is walking with me, even in this season of loss.”
In the end, the session was not just about managing the pain of divorce but about reclaiming peace, purpose, and the confidence to move forward with dignity and hope.
