Wednesday July 30th: High stakes

… “When he finds one (a pearl) of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.”

Matthew 13: 44-46

It have anything that you want so bad you will give your eye teeth to get?… That car, house, dream job? Uh?

Today Jesus showing us it have higher stakes! In the parable the man sell toute bagai, everything to get that ‘great pearl’ he wanted so bad. This have me asking myself how I rate the kingdom and what I prepared to trade to get it.

Sometimes, before making a decision I does haggle, compromise, and end up shortchanging myself, hankering after, and holding on to things that insignificant and worthless in comparison to kingdom offerings. Grasping at fleeting pleasures, I miss out on everlasting joy, peace and fulfilment that come from knowing Christ.

And what bout you? How you rate the kingdom? What you prepared to give up for it? Eh? As we reflect on today’s Gospel, together let us say as St Paul did in Phil 3:8, ‘For him I have accepted the loss of all other things, and look on them all as filth if only I can gain Christ.’ Amen.
