Feast of St. James, Apostle.
“Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.”
Matthew 20: 20–28
Today we celebrate the Feast of St. James the Apostle, one of Jesus’ closest companions. In Matthew 20: 20 – 28, we hear the request of James and John’s mother, seeking glory for her sons. But Jesus responds with a deeper challenge: “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” James would indeed drink that cup, he became the first apostle to be martyred.
Jesus redefines greatness: it is not about power, but service. “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.” In a world where ambition often drives us, Jesus calls us to humility, to pour ourselves out for others. James learned this path not through privilege, but through walking with Jesus, failing, repenting, and ultimately giving his life.
As we honour St. James, let us not seek positions of honour, but the grace to follow Christ more faithfully. May we too be willing to drink the cup of sacrifice and serve with love, for in doing so, we reflect the true greatness of the Kingdom.
