Thursday July 17th: Come to me

To be joined to and with Jesus by His yoke, makes our burdens easy to bear and light.

Matthew 11:28-30

As a parent, the phrase, “Come to daddy/mommy” is common. Not so different from Jesus’ invite to us. When our children are in distress, burdened by pain, sadness, heartache, who do they often turn to for comfort, solace, or hope? The trusting invitation of mommy and daddy with wide open arms of love, saying, “Come to me.” As parents we are “the continuation of this invitation which Jesus addressed to people who were burdened by the law and the purity code prescribed by the scribes and Pharisees.”.

But this Gospel is not only for children but also for us parents and all who are “weary and carrying heavy burdens” and need “rest.” Jesus’ invitation to learn from Him is needed today. To be joined to and with Him by His yoke makes our burdens easy to bear and light. Just like the yoke fitted for oxen to work together carrying heavy loads, Jesus’ yoke is tailor-made for us.

Lord, I can’t carry the burden of this day without you. Teach me. Lead and guide me. Place your yoke upon me.
