“Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida!”

Matthew 11: 20-24

In this passage, Jesus chastises the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum for failing to be moved by the miracles he performed in their cities. In contrast, he refers to the towns of Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom, which in the past were cursed and destroyed for their evil behaviour, yet, he says, had they seen the miracles worked in Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, they would have believed and converted their lives. Therefore, Jesus warns those cities that they will be dealt with severely on judgment day.

We, too, are called to be transformed by the miracles we witness every day – a glorious sunset, a miraculous recovery from surgery, a blossoming rose garden, a long-lasting friendship. However, we can become complacent and not recognize the source of these miracles, Jesus Christ, and if we are not changed by them, we too may suffer the same fate as those cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum.

Lord, give us an open mind and generous heart to celebrate, everyday, the miracles in our lives. Amen.
