“…and, whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”
Matthew 10:34 – 11: 1
In today’s Gospel, Jesus clarifies that true discipleship is not for our sake, but His! He begins by explaining that following Him may not always bring peace but instead may cause division, even among family members. Then, He states that we are called to love God above all else, and not only should we take up our crosses and follow Him but also lose our lives for His sake in order to find it.
Hmmmm, a tall order indeed; but then Jesus reassures us that by welcoming Him in our lives and those He sent, we will be rewarded justly. Yes, He’s talking about loving and welcoming that difficult Ministry Leader, or fellow parishioner or even Parish Priest. Are we really striving to be true disciples? Is our focus on God and loving Him through His people? Are we holding on so tight to ‘parish work’, that we’re missing the point of true discipleship?
Lord, help me to let go whatever in my life is hindering me from being a true disciple. Amen.
