Tuesday July 8th: Spreading the Good News

‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few.’

Matthew 9: 32- 37

Jesus heals a dumb demoniac, and the devil is cast out. Many marvelled as they had never witnessed anything like this. The Pharisees, however, criticised him.

People who do extraordinarily charitable deeds are often criticised by others. I once heard a commentator say that St. Mother Teresa should have tried to be rich so that she could give money to the poor.

This ‘mauvais langue’ did not hinder Jesus from what he had set out to do, and when he saw how the people were eager for the Good News but were dejected, he lamented, saying, ‘The harvest is rich, but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’

We are the potential labourers, so we need to pray in this Jubilee year that the Spirit would inspire us to spread the Good News.
