Bethesda celebrates tenth anniversary with more First Communion, Confirmation

On Sunday, June 29, the Bethesda Catholic Community for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) celebrated its tenth anniversary with a joyful and moving Eucharistic celebration at St Paul’s RC Church, Couva. Held appropriately on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul—the patron saints of the Couva parishes—the Mass marked not only a decade of Bethesda’s ministry, but also the reception of sacraments by 11 members of the community.

The celebration was deeply symbolic. Saints Peter and Paul, pillars of the Church, gave their lives in faith, and the homily reflected on their witness, sacrifice, and unwavering love for Christ.

Archbishop Emeritus Robert Rivas OP was the chief celebrant, concelebrating with Fr Emmanuel Vandi CSSp of Holy Trinity Parish, Arouca. Rev Andy Singh assisted. The occasion was made even more special as Archbishop Rivas also observed his 54th anniversary as a priest on June 27.

St Paul’s parish welcomed the Bethesda community with warmth and hospitality. The church was beautifully prepared, and every effort was made to ensure an accessible, inclusive, and comfortable environment—an act of true Christian care.

Readers from the families of two of the candidates proclaimed the Word, and the liturgy was marked by reverence, joy, and a profound sense of belonging. It was a powerful reminder that all are truly welcome at the table of the Lord.

The candidates, ranging in age from 7 to 55, are diagnosed with Autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and other combined developmental challenges. Yet their faith, courage, and radiant joy stood as a moving testimony to God’s grace at work.

Bethesda’s journey began with a mother’s prayer. Saira La Foucade, now the community coordinator and director, longed for her son to experience the Mass in a space suited to his needs.

What began as a single sensory-friendly Mass has since grown into a vibrant ministry offering monthly liturgies, an annual Respite Camp, monthly Parent Support Group meetings and a Sibling Support Initiative that nurtures the brothers and sisters of persons with disabilities—all providing essential support to the entire family.

Over the past ten years, Bethesda has become a growing, grace-filled movement that reveals God’s love through community, patience, and the gift of presence. As the recessional hymn filled the church and the final blessing was given, the joy and gratitude in the space were undeniable.

Ten years ago, Bethesda began with one act of faith. Today, it stands as a living reminder that when we make room for everyone, we make room for Christ.
