“Take Heart, I have overcome the world.”

Sabella Morris-Olivier

By Sabella Morris-Olivier

This past week, I’ve silently looked at the many societal perils we are currently facing. So many families are in crisis, yet we continue about our lives, trying our best as Christians, to follow Christ. But does this mean we are exempt from trials and tribulations? No. God never promised us an easy life, in fact Jesus clearly said:

“I have told you these things, so that you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).

Perhaps if, as we walk the Earth, we do more to bring others to Christ, then we too would be as the first disciples: courageous, compassionate and brave to stand in the gap for others.

We must first accept some fundamental truths as Christians:

Life involves Troubles

The real, raw truth is that this life is hard. People are struggling physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially. Families are under strain and they generally have little support. As you read this, ask yourself right now: Do I know of any friend, colleague or family member facing a difficult situation? Think of how you can help, even if it starts with a small step to offer a prayer intention at Mass; send words of comfort; listen without judgement; or simply pray with or for them. Share any information on healing and deliverance ministries in your parish or prayer community so that they may find comfort in hearing God’s voice.

Jesus has Overcome the World

Jesus is the Saviour of the world. Though some may not yet accept this truth, we can still invite others to experience the healing graces that Jesus offers us even now. Jesus’ own journey was not easy, the Son of Man was lifted up in pain and suffering but He triumphed. His victory is our victory. This testimony of hope is regardless of what we face in life, once we accept Him into our lives, Jesus will always walk with us. So, although in this world we may face trouble, true peace will be found in our journey with the Lord. Though He left the Earth, Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, our Helper to guide and comfort us. He will teach us all things. We must invite the Holy Spirit into our homes, families and every situation.

Pursue faith

Jesus asks us to keep our faith especially when life is difficult. Although it may seem that some storms are never-ending, He wants us to be at peace through the storm. Although it may seem as if that person or situation in your life is too far gone, your child or grandchild is not listening, the neighbour’s hardship is none of your business, our faith says otherwise. Jesus invites us to persevere and hold on to our faith as Christians because He has won victory over this world.

Extend every ounce of kindness you can to someone around you facing what may seem like an impossible situation. Attempt to bring the peace and love that Jesus offers us daily into their lives. Someone is waiting on you to be their angel on Earth. And remember: God did not promise an easy life, but He did offer us His presence. The faith we have in Him offers comfort, guidance and grace to keep going.
