Wednesday June 25th: False prophets

“I repeat, you will be able to tell them by their fruits.”

Matthew 7: 15 -20

In today’s Gospel passage Jesus warns us so that we will not be fooled by false prophets who come “disguised as sheep” but are “ravenous wolves.”

He cautions us about judging people by their outward looks.

Then, how should we distinguish true prophets from false prophets?

“Can people pick grapes from thorns?” Jesus asks. Thorns are dangerous, harmful, and sometimes poisonous. He compares the false prophets to thorns. We will be able to know them by their fruits.

A good tree produces good fruit, but a rotten tree produces bad fruit.

We must pray and ask God to help us to discern the good, true prophets from the false ones. Allow the Holy Spirit of God to guide us as we pray, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from all that is evil. Amen.”
