If we fill our eyes with envy, greed, or distraction, darkness creeps into our hearts.
Matthew 6: 19 – 23
In today’s gospel, Jesus tells us, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.” What a powerful image! The eye — the way we look at the world — becomes the window through which light enters our soul.
Today, we are constantly surrounded by images: social media, advertising, screens everywhere. What we look at, what we focus on, deeply shapes who we become. If we fill our eyes with envy, greed, or distraction, darkness creeps into our hearts. But if we choose to focus on goodness, truth, and beauty, we become light for others.
To have a “sound eye” means to see as Christ sees — with compassion, clarity, and purpose. It means looking at others not as objects or competitors, but as beloved children of God. Let us ask today: What am I letting into my soul through my eyes? May we guard our gaze, so that we may walk in light and lead others to it.
