“An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.”
Matthew 5:38-42
Changing perspectives allows us a certain freedom since we don’t necessarily have to follow current trends. For Jesus, he would have grown up hearing the ancient maxim “an eye for an eye” which did not sit well with him.
When we are hurt or aggrieved or are called to go beyond the call of duty, how should we respond? Jesus shows us the way. Turning the other cheek, giving more than is asked or going the extra mile will certainly bring us closer to how the Father wants us to live. We are all children of God and whether we are the wronged one or the one who wrongs, there is always a more amiable solution. Seeking revenge or being self-serving cannot be the answer. The great Hindu leader Mahatma Gandhi puts it in perspective: “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.”
Dear Father, send us your Spirit so that we can transform our lives and live the way Jesus taught us. Amen.
