Friday June 13th: Beyond the Letter of the Law

Sin begins not just in action, but in the heart.

Matthew 5: 27 – 32

In today’s Gospel, Jesus deepens the commandment, “You shall not commit adultery,” reminding us that sin begins not just in action, but in the heart. He calls us beyond the letter of the law into its very spirit — a call to inner purity, fidelity, and integrity.

Too often, we settle for minimal obedience, asking, “What am I allowed to do?” rather than “What kind of person is God calling me to become?” Jesus teaches that true righteousness is not legalistic but transformative.

This is not about shame or fear, but about freedom — freedom from the inner chains of lust, selfishness, and deceit. Christ invites us to take drastic measures — not literally cutting off hands but courageously removing anything that leads us away from love.

Living by the spirit of the law means guarding our hearts, honouring others as sacred, and nurturing relationships rooted in trust and self-giving love. When we live this way, God’s kingdom truly begins to take shape within us and among us.
