‘Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven’
Matthew 5:20-26
Jesus saying this to shepherds, fisherfolk, agriculture workers and peasants must have been shocking to them. The scribes and Pharisees were the religious professionals—experts in the Law. They followed the commandments meticulously. How could anyone be more righteous than them?
But Jesus is not speaking of external demonstrations. He is speaking of the righteousness of the heart. In our world today, so often evil motivations are hidden behind a show of care. Things are presented in a way that hides the real goals. ‘Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within’ (1970s song by Undisputed Truth)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is saying to us – check your true intentions. Are you genuinely acting out of love and charity or are you just trying to look good in the eyes of others?
