Mary, Mother of the Church
‘It is accomplished.’
John 19:25-34
In today’s gospel, we see Jesus’ close friends gathered at the foot of his cross. Jesus is on the cross dying and says, ‘It is accomplished.’
Jesus came to save us, and to do this, he had to die and rise again, so when he had died, he knew that the resurrection was coming, as he told the Jews in John 2:19, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ His mission on earth had been accomplished, and we were saved by his resurrection.
This is akin to children gathering around the bed of dying parents, who prepared them well to be successful in life, and made sure to leave a will so that all would be satisfied. Such parents can afford to say as they are dying, ‘My mission is accomplished.’
Lord, may I live my life with you as an example so that at the end of my days I will be able to say, like you, ‘It is accomplished.’
